About Us – The Cookout Trivia App

About Us

The Story

I’m a 70s baby that grew up on music and tv from the 80s and 90s. I loved Soul Train with Don Cornelius, Video Soul with Donnie Simpson, Rap City with it’s first mayor Chris Thomas, The Cosby Show, A Different World, and everything Spike Lee did.I also grew up in the golden age of NBA basketball, transitioning from Dr. J. to Magic and Michael.   I collected comic books (I’m a Marvel brother), and I loved learning. I have a soul deep of love for my Blackness, Black people, and an awesome love and pride for the culture that Black people have created throughout the Diaspora that continues to inspire the world in spite of the challenges the world throws at Us.  I liked school with the exception of Social Studies and History. When I was younger and up through middle school I didn’t know why I had such a distaste for social studies when I loved learning and did any other subject with interest and ease.

When I got to high school, that’s when it clicked…

In my World History class my hand went up…

“Mr. Butler, when are we going to get to Africa?”

I don’t remember his response, but I doubt it was something satisfactory, because over that entire year, I raised my hand several times to ask the same question.  To make a long story short, we never got to Africa and I doubt that it was even in the curriculum.

The next year I had U.S. History.  My hand went up but not as often as it did in World History. The teacher made an effort to tell us about any Black figures that were involved within the “his”torical stories, but i’d be hard pressed to recall much outside of Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Fast forward to today and as I’m surfing on my phone, I come across a live trivia app, and I play it. The game was fun, but I wasn’t engaged. The trivia was over things that I didn’t care about. A lightbulb clicked on!

“Wait a minute…..I can do that!”

But I can cover trivia that actually would actually interest me and keep me engaged. BLACK trivia. And not just trivia about Hip Hop or Sports or movies, but trivia that covers the entire spectrum of what Black folk have contributed to the world. Accomplishments that We made in Science, Medicine, Art, and Technology too because Our contributions to the world are significant, vast, and will NOT be forgotten.

Lastly, my passion has always been to support and promote Black owned businesses through the use of impactful technology with a wide reach. I’ve been a techie in my professional career and with my knowledge of how to assemble technologies, I set out to make The Cookout Trivia app.

The Cause

There are 3.4 million Black Owned Businesses in the U.S. that all need one thing: NEW CUSTOMERS. The Cookout Trivia will be the platform for many of them to get in front of new ones.

The Cookout Trivia app serves Black Owned Businesses by providing prospective customers a fun new way to discover and support them. Advertising is open to all BOBs, whether product, service, or information and entertainment related.

Video ads from BOBs will play before gameplay as players are joining, during gameplay while the audience is captive, and after gameplay for players that want to maximize their winnings. BOB owners may get an opportunities for guest appearances before, during, and after gameplay. Three or more BOBs will be sponsors for that night’s game with either their product, service, or cash. Other BOBs may or may not be sponsors for the game, but all BOBs will have the opportunity for ad placement before, during, and after gameplay, as well as permanent placement in subsequent YouTube videos on either The Cookout Trivia channel or the Brian Ashley 3000 channel.

The Pledge

To grow The Cookout Trivia with our promise to feature and promote Black Owned Businesses. Reinvesting in OURSELVES gives our players access to choices for great products and services and increase the success and stability of Our community.
